How to stay fit into old age

Some months ago I went on a hike with a group of people and we didn’t know each other very well.
After a while a guy in his 50s asked me how to stay fit and how to train for it. “Matthias, what’s the best way to train?”

I get these kind of questions quite often and of course I could give a generalized answer to this very broad question.

But that time, I decided to do something different.
I didn’t want to give an immediate answer by holding a lecture, counting all points that help to stay fit.

In our group was a 75 year old guy hiking with us who is really fit for his age.
So I asked HIM, how he stayed so fit over the years.

And the answer didn’t surprise me.

He said, he had a fixed routine, that he basically never skipped. Some cardiovascular training, some decent resistance training with his own body weight.
Not overdoing anything, just a reasonable amount of exercise and movement each day and three short workouts per week.

„And how long have you been doing that?“
„Almost thirty years“, was his answer.

In the next Newsletter, I will tell you, what he did to restart this routine after being forced to stop for a while.

To be well in your seventies, you better start twenty years earlier.

Matthias.
