How to Stay Fit as You Age

A few months ago, I went on a hike with a group of people, and we didn’t know each other very well.
After a while, a man in his 50s asked me how to stay fit and how to train for it. “Matthias, what’s the best way to train?”

I get these kinds of questions quite often, and of course I could give a general answer to this very broad question.

But this time, I decided to do something different.
I didn’t want to give an immediate answer by giving a lecture and listing all the ways to stay fit.

There was a 75-year-old man hiking with our group who is really fit for his age.
So I asked HIM how he had stayed so fit over the years.

And the answer didn't surprise me.

He said he had a set routine that he basically never skipped. Some cardiovascular training, some solid resistance training using his own body weight.
He didn't overdo anything—just a reasonable amount of exercise and movement every day and three short workouts per week.

“And how long have you been doing that?”
“Almost thirty years,” he replied.

In the next newsletter, I'll tell you what he did to get back into this routine after being forced to stop for a while.

If you want to be healthy in your seventies, you'd better start twenty years earlier.

Matthias.
